A revamped retail space has opened at the Canberra Glassworks, designed to “excite interior designers and architects” as much as visitors. The glassworks shop has been opened up to better display and sell a range of pieces, from glass straws to large, decorative pieces, such as those by local artist Harriet Schwarzrock. The space was overhauled by local designer Skeehan Studio and officially launched on Wednesday night, introduced with a welcome to country by Paul House. The glassworks’ brand manager Rachel Byron said it was the first time the shop had been overhauled for more than 13 years. Its brief was for a space that was “brighter, lighter, welcoming, COVID-safe and [visible] from all angles”. “The trick was just finding a colour palette and textures that highlight all glass because we have over 100 consignment artists and our own in-house work that we want to showcase,” Ms Byron said. Sixty people enjoyed the opening with live music, food and a private viewing of Scott Chaseling’s solo show The Redemption of Colour. And the shop may eventually be selling pieces made from recycled television screens. The glassworks has applied for funding to research recycling the screens on a large scale, turning them from potential landfill to beautiful artwork.
