It was four years ago on Thursday that The Markets Wanniassa had its first official pop-up shop before moving into permanent premises in the Wanniassa shops in March 2017. “Grateful. Tired. Happy. Positive about our biz future,” is how co-owner Fiona Lester describes reaching the fourth birthday milestone. “I remember hitting the first birthday and high-fiving ourselves for not becoming a small business statistic – most fold in the first 12 months. Now we’ve hit four years I’m busting to hit the five-year mark.” She and husband James opened the shop as an outlet for local makers of original and bespoke goods. They are often helped in the shop by the youngest of their nine children, Olivia, Matilda and Eddie. “So grateful for the support our business has received from all our customers far and wide, and thankful to all the businesses that have been part of our journey over the years,” Fiona said. “I’ve loved watching the business evolve as a result of listening to what our customers want and sourcing funky offbeat items. Watching the little businesses within our business grow and flourish is pretty amazing, too. “We have the best community in Canberra and love that we have the ability to support community groups via our business. Community and people is what it’s all about. “A big enormous thank you to the three mini Markets – Olivia, Matilda and Eddie – who have learned to, mostly, embrace shop life over the past four years, too. Their life forever changed four years ago, too.”
