Adelaide’s hot property market is showing no signs of cooling off this festive season, with auctions being held right up until Christmas and days after the new year kicks off.

Traditionally the market slows down in mid-December then picks back up in late January but industry experts say that is not the case this year.

BR Auctioneer director Brett Roenfeldt said many agents were planning on working through the usually quieter period while the market was hot, especially given the looming uncertainty with the Federal Government’s JobKeeper and JobSeeker scheme ending in late March.

“Everybody that I’ve been speaking to is saying the market is still extremely strong,” he said.

“There’s a large percentage of agents who are pushing and working all the way through Christmas and the New Year.

“They’re making the most of it while the market is as strong as it is at the moment.”

According to realestate.com.au there are auctions scheduled up until December 23 and the first one in January is on the 6th.

Ray White Henley Beach agent Jae Curtis was taking the Fulham Gardens house at 9 Coppins Terrace to auction on December 23.

He said it was as good a time as any because demand for property was still strong and they were selling quickly.

“It feels like it’s going to be pretty busy in January too,” he said.

“Because a lot of people held off at the start of the year (because of COVID-19), I think it’s going to be consistently busy for a while.”

Nick and Kirsty Havill listed their Semaphore home on Turton Street earlier this month in preparation for auction on December 22.

The couple found a larger home so have decided to sell to move in there.

They also felt summer was a good time to sell given that was when the enviable lifestyle that comes with a beachside suburb was on show.

“To sell a coastal property, you want to do it in summer,” Ms Havill said.

“Being near Semaphore Rd, it’s always busy here too.”

Mr Havill said they felt confident in the strong market.

Harcourts Smith principal Kate Smith kept her Semaphore office open during the festive season to cater for holiday-makers looking to buy in the area.

“This year, without a doubt, there are plenty of buyers out there and stock levels are low,” she said.

“I’ve been selling now for 19 years and this is the first time in my career that every day I’ll get an inquiry, or multiple, from interstate.”

She said a combination of Adelaide expats and those attracted to the city’s lifestyle and affordability, which have been made more apparent during the coronavirus pandemic, were looking for property.
