Traditional necklaces were a coded apparel, sending a message of purpose. They were also offered as a gift to people passing through country as a sign of safe passage and friendship.

Award patron Djon Mundine says the necklace is an object of connection – most importantly, to place and family.

“It’s like the embryo cord, connecting us all to our mother, to the other world,” Mundine says. “It gives you sustenance and allows you support to grow and learn.”
