Two Icon Water employees chased and cornered a knife-wielding robber about 400 metres from the scene of a brazen daylight hold-up at a suburban Belconnen shopping centre on Friday, police say. The offender eventually managed to flee, but police will allege in court that he is a 23-year-old man who was subsequently arrested during a raid early on Sunday morning. In a statement on Sunday, ACT Policing said a man armed with a knife demanded cash from a staff member at an Evatt business about 1.15pm on Friday. The offender then jumped the counter and opened the till, according to police, before fleeing on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash. Officers said the staff member chased the robber to the front of the store and asked two Icon Water workers, who were at the shopping centre, for help. This duo then ran after the offender and caught up with him on a footpath, taking some of the cash from him before he fled. The heroic bystanders then returned to the shop with what they had recovered. After police executed a search warrant and apprehended the man they allege to be the offender, officers took the 23-year-old to the ACT Watch House and charged him with one count of aggravated robbery. The man is expected to face the ACT Magistrates Court on Monday.
