Canberra will be bringing in the new year with mild temperatures, yet not before some chances of thunderstorms. It was expected to reach 32 degrees today, the hottest expected temperature of the week – and we got awfully close, reaching 31.1 degrees at 4.30pm. There is a slight chance of a thunderstorm this evening. The heat is coupled with north-westerly winds reaching up to 25km/h. Wind are expected to reduce in the evening. There’s an 80 per cent chance of between 3mm and 15mm of rain tomorrow, including more possible thunderstorms. Meteorologist at the Bureau Hugh McDowell said he does not expect there to be a severe weather warning on Monday. “There’s a cold front from south-west bringing some showers and a chance of the thunderstorm,” he said. “While you can see showers and thunderstorms throughout the day they’re probably not going to be severe thunderstorms at this stage.” Temperatures on Monday will be slightly cooler, with a low of 17 and a top of 29. Throughout the week temperatures will remain in the early to mid twenties. Despite the mild temperatures, Mr McDowell said the weather may be unsettled. “There will likely be more thunderstorms through the days, not every day,” he said. “It won’t be wall-to-wall sunshine.” Throughout the week: Tuesday will be cloudy with a top temperature of 22 degrees and a 40 per cent chance of showers. It will be cloudy on Wednesday with a top of 24 degrees and a 20 per cent chance of rain. New Years Eve is forecasted to reach 25 degrees with light winds and a 30 per cent chance of showers. New Years Day is expected to be slightly cooler with a top of 22 degrees and a medium chance of rain. The mild temperatures will continue next weekend with Saturday expected to reach 21 degrees with a medium chance of showers.
