Mr Sibma said the party missed a prime chance of renewal ahead of the 2013 election when no incumbent MP was challenged for their preselection.

He said the party must begin rebuilding immediately to ensure it was a politically competitive force in 2025.

The statement is one of the first from a sitting Liberal member to acknowledge the party’s own failings in its election defeat.

There will be several blue ribbon seats ripe for new blood come 2025 when the party can try and claim heartland seats — which look like falling this election — such as Nedlands, Carine, South Perth, Bateman, and Scarborough.

Mr Calabese and Ms Duda announced the party would undertake a comprehensive review of its election campaign, encouraging all party members to participate.

“Political parties have faced worse defeats in more ordinary times. They have always come back, because they’re built on universal values and united in a common cause,” they said.

“The WA Liberals will come back stronger, by learning from history and our mistakes – over the entirety of the last four years. It will take time, effort and unity, but I [we] know we are up to the challenge.”

Outgoing Opposition Leader Zak Kirkup has defended the party’s pre-selection process despite election incidents like a candidate being disendorsed over their views on 5G and COVID-19 and retiring MP Mike Nahan criticising the influence of upper house powerbrokers Nick Goiran and Peter Collier.
