Reports a young AFL player touted as a rising star had been involved in a dramatic car crash caused a stir in Montmorency, until the case of mistaken identity was uncovered.

Reports a “rising star” AFL player was involved in a dramatic car crash in Melbourne’s north have been dismissed as a case of mistaken identity.

Police were called to a car crash on Airlie Road in Montmorency about 9.15pm on Tuesday to reports of the incident.

“Police have been told a car crashed into a parked car and rolled,” a police spokeswoman said.

“The 22-year old male driver from Montmorency was not seriously injured and the investigation into the crash continues.”

Residents of a quiet Montmorency street reported hearing a “loud bang” before witnessing a young man remarkably crawling out of the car he had flipped just 150m from his home.

“I heard a loud bang and then ran out to see what was going on,” Airlie Rd resident Dave told the Herald Sun.

“The car was turned out on its head.

“The guy crawled out of the car, he was definitely concussed.

“He wasn’t bleeding anywhere but he was crying out for his dog.”

The man walked free from the carnage he had inflicted upon his girlfriend’s dark coloured Mazda vehicle.

“I couldn’t believe it,” Dave said.

“It was only 150m from his home. I don’t think his girlfriend was too impressed.”

Paramedics treated the male and took him to hospital as a precaution.

The damaged car remains parked at their home this morning.

It has extensive damage to the windscreen and bonnet.

A caller to 3AW’s Rumour File said he believed the man may have been a “rising star” of the AFL.

But local residents said the accident prone youngster’s activewear and fit build were the only link to the sporting arena.
