ACT Policing believe a motorcyclist who died in a collision yesterday veered onto the wrong side of the road, left the road and collided with a pedestrian guard rail shortly before crashing. Addressing the media on Tuesday Sergeant Stephen Booth from ACT Policing’s Major Collision Team said police believe the motorcyclist was travelling towards Eastern Valley Way on Hennessey Street, Belconnen. “No other vehicles to our knowledge have been involved at this time,” he said. Emergency services were called to the scene at 5.15pm Monday afternoon. The man was treated at the scene and died after being transported to hospital. The 47-year-old man is the second person to die on ACT’s roads in 2021, following the death of 21-year-old Alex Coppinger in another single-vehicle motorcycle crash in January. Sergeant Booth said motorcyclists were over-represented in the ACT’s road toll. “It is a concern that we’ve got a second fatality at all this early in the year,” Sergeant Booth said. “Riding a motorbike is not inherently dangerous in itself but it doesn’t leave a large margin for error. “When things go wrong you are much more likely to suffer a serious or even fatal injury. “I’d ask all motorcyclists on the road to take greater care. “Enjoy your motorcycles, but be safe on our road.” Sergeant Booth said Monday’s storm and wet weather was not a factor in the collision. “The collision occurred a short time before the storm had hit the Belconnen area last night,” he said. “Investigators were able to get to the site and gather a lot of the evidence. “I do not believe that we’ve lost anything really in that storm.” Sergeant Booth said ACT Policing were still interested in speaking to witnesses of the crash. “We spoke to a lot of witnesses at the scene last night, however because the storm did roll in rather heavily a lot of people may not have hung around. “If there are people who do have information or witnessed the scene who haven’t already spoken to police I’d encourage them to come forward.” A report will be prepared for the coroner. Anyone with dash-cam footage or information that may assist police can contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers ACT website.
