“We are in the process of syndicating our part of Profiteer amongst many of the country’s leading
bloodstock investors, and there is a small amount of shares left.”

Field has been a master of the yearling market, buying horses like Golden Slipper winner Capitalist and Russian Revolution out of the ring, but has also proven smart in finding the right horse once they get on the track, such as Extreme Choice, which won a Blue Diamond and now stands at Newgate Farm.

“The yearling market is very tough this year and we came away from Magic Millions with about half the number of colts we usually do, so when an opportunity to buy these good colts came along we took it,” he said.

“You are looking for those colts with potential to take the next step and try to get them before they win that group 1.”

North Pacific was a sale-topping $800,000 purchase as a yearling at the Inglis Premier sale two years ago and is already group 1-placed as runner-up in the Golden Rose. Newgate’s stallion syndicate has joined Orbis in the ownership. The three-year-old is certain to get his chance at the highest level during the autumn and is likely to resume at Randwick in the $1 million Inglis Sprint on Saturday.

Profiteer was a $165,000 purchase at last year’s Inglis Classic Sale and was impressive in winning his only start at Flemington in December. Trainers Mick Price and Mick Kent junior decided to follow the Millennium path to Blue Diamond and possibly a Golden Slipper.

Price and Roll The Dice have had a lot of success together, and the trainer said the colt was a standout at the sales and has converted his good looks to the track.

“They ask my opinion of horses and I remember saying about Profiteer, whatever your limit is make sure you spend it on this horse,” Price said.

“I thought he was just a very well-balanced horse and a chance at making a two-year-old looking at him.

“He was by a Golden Slipper winner, which was a bonus, and the price of Capitalist horses has gone up since he had runners because of what they have done.”

Hugh Bowman will ride Profiteer in the Millennium and was in the saddle for his first public Sydney outing when he ran good time winning a Rosehill barrier trial last Wednesday.

“Hughie was very impressed with him, which was encouraging,” Price said. “He has had a few practice goes at Caulfield on the inside grass, which is cambered, and went favourably. That helps to teach them to get on the right leg.

“I don’t think going Sydney way will be a problem for him.

“It is great prizemoney, especially when you consider that you take all the Magic Millions horses out of the mix and the horses aiming at the Blue Diamond, how can you say no to a $2 million race with a good colt.

“This is not to say he can’t win a Blue Diamond or Golden Slipper, but he is cherry ripe for a $2 million race on Saturday.”
