But there it was: Guy Fawkes Night, also known as bonfire night, lit up our small world in south-west Victoria every November 5, right through to the end of the 1970s.
The pyres were set ablaze, fathers drank from long necks in the light of the flames, mothers stayed sensibly indoors, fearing the worst, and children tumbled about tossing explosive bungers and setting off rockets from bottles. Dogs retreated howling to the depths of their kennels.
