Kurt Alchemy, who led the group beating a drum, said the group of protesters wanted to express their freedom of speech and opposition to the new rule.

“We feel like we have the right to wear a mask or not wear a mask depending on our belief systems,” he said.

Mr Alchemy said he believed the masks and the use of hand sanitiser were unhealthy.

Other protesters said they were marching to protect their rights to choose whether or not they wanted to wear a mask.

Paulette Meath, from Sylvania, said COVID-19 was being used as an excuse to diminish civil liberties and human rights.

“We need people to realise that this isn’t normal,” she said.

“It is about personal freedom,” Kim Lec, from Bellevue Hill, said.
