“First of all, I want to thank everyone who has done the right thing over the past three days. This has been something unprecedented, a world first, and an Australian first. We wanted to make sure we acted quickly, we acted strongly, we acted decisively and that is exactly what we did. Can I thank people in the Greater Brisbane region for responding in the way that they did. It has been absolutely truly remarkable.
“So, I can announce that the reward for their sacrifice is that we are able to end our lockdown after three days. That is fantastic news. So from 6pm tonight that lockdown will end. However, we will need to continue some restrictions.”
However, for the next 10 days, masks must still be worn in shopping centres, supermarkets, retail outlets, hospitals, aged care facilities, places of worship, gyms, public transport and ride-share services.
The stay-at-home restrictions came into effect at 6pm on Friday due to fears of a community outbreak of highly infectious new strain of COVID-19, which first emerged in the UK and was transmitted to a cleaner who worked in one of Brisbane’s hotel quarantine facilities.
