Federal politicians travelling to Canberra from Perth have been told not to go to Parliament House just days before sitting resumes, as parts of Western Australia were sent into lockdown. Passengers on the Qantas flight which landed at Canberra Airport from Perth at 6.40pm Sunday have been advised by ACT Health to wear a mask and travel directly to their accommodation. ACT Deputy Chief Health Officer Vanessa Johnston said all passengers should be extra cautious, after Perth was sent into a five-day lockdown following the discovery of a positive COVID-19 case in a hotel quarantine worker. WA authorities believe the security guard in his 20s, who worked at the Sheraton Four Points hotel in Perth’s CBD, has likely contracted the highly contagious UK variant of the virus and have urged anyone to get tested if they have symptoms. “Passengers should review the WA government COVID-19 website and follow all directions from WA authorities. This website is being updated very frequently, so please check back regularly for the latest information,” Dr Johnston said. “ACT Health is monitoring the situation in Western Australia and will be making further decisions as additional information is received from WA authorities. We will be in contact with passengers tomorrow. “Of course, any person who starts to experience symptoms of COVID-19 should get tested immediately.” Several federal politicians were on route to Canberra from WA ahead of Parliament resuming next week. Speaker Tony Smith has advised any politicians coming from the lockdown areas not to attend Parliament House. Among the WA politicians are some of the most senior government positions including Attorney General Christian Porter and Defence Minister Linda Reynolds. Mr Porter is also Leader of the House, responsible for coordinating legislation, question time and other parliamentary business on behalf of the government.
