Phil Mickelson has widened his lead at the PGA Championship.
Mickelson made his fourth birdie of the day on the 10th hole to move to 8 under and take a four-shot lead over Louis Oosthuizen and Brooks Koepka at the Ocean Course on Sunday.
The crowd went crazy when Mickelson’s putt rolled in. Moments later, Koepka missed a par-saving putt to drop down with just eight holes remaining.
The 50-year-old Mickelson is trying to become golf’s oldest man to win a major.
It has been a tournament to forget for the Australians.
Australia’s top-ranked player Cameron Smith raised slight hopes of a charge towards a back-door top 10 with two birdies to open his final round but a bogey and double bogey soon after started a big slide.
Smith shot a five-over 77 to plummet to 7-over.
European Tour player Jason Scrivener finished as the leading Australian with a three-under 69 lifting the Western Australian to 1-over for the week, which might yet result in a top-25 finish in just his second major.
Former world number Jason Day fell short of his quest to finish inside the top 17 of the tournament, the mark needed to have a chance to qualify for the US Open.
A one-under 71 saw him finish 4-over for the week.
Matt Jones finished strong with a 68 to get to 2-over, Cameron Davis (72) finished up 7-over while Lucas Herbert (72) signed off at 9-over.
