A woman defrauded a Canberra childcare centre of more than $160,000, and possibly about $480,000, police say. ACT Policing said they had charged a 46-year-old Campbell woman with fraud as part of an ongoing investigation into fraudulent activity at a Weston child care centre. The woman was arrested on Friday morning and charged with 23 counts of obtaining property by deception to the value of more than $160,000. She is expected to face ACT Magistrates Court on Friday afternoon. Officers were still investigating the misappropriation of funds, and they expect to charge the woman with additional offences. ACT Policing suspect the woman illegally obtained more than $480,000 and they do not believe other people were involved. They said the safety of children at the centre had not been compromised as a result of the alleged fraudulent activity. Police said they would liaise with government regulators to ensure the childcare centre could continue operating. Our journalists work hard to provide local, up-to-date news to the community.
