After being thrust into the job suddenly with a few unexpected changes at committee level earlier this year, Rodgers says he has enjoyed the role so far, engaging with the team in a different manner to just being a player in the organisation. The experienced Rodgers has previously held the title of team captain on the field while playing running back and line backer for the Far North-based Falcons.

“I’m an investigator in the Queensland Police Service by profession so not having a background or much knowledge base into running a civil organisation, albeit a football club has been a big learning experience with policy and legislation but with the help of my treasurer and long time Falcons stalwart Warren Lee, I’m slowly learning the ropes on that side of the ball,” Rodgers said.“With all sports teams, the goal is to win the grand final year in and year out however operationally I intend, with the help of the committee to build on the success of this year going forward, that is to continue to cultivate a good team culture for all ages as well as continue to develop and nurture our relationships with our local sponsors and supporter base who have been nothing short of vital to the club financially and operationally this year. “If it wasn’t for the likes of our local MP Curtis Pitt, The Bungalow Hotel, Australian Professional Galvanising, BBQ Brothers and other sponsors, Cairns Falcons wouldn’t have a leg to stand on.”

The Falcons are 1-1 to start the 2020-21 NQ gridiron season, knocking over the Chargers first up on their home deck before they fell 36-32 to Mackay Mavericks at Townsville in their most recent contest. They again make the trip to Townsville this weekend for another clash with the Chargers, the newcomers of the competition, with the club’s president desperate to bounce back from their loss to Mackay just seven days ago. “Preparation and attitude are the key this week,” he said.“We had our pants pulled down last week, had a lot of uncharacteristic errors and left it too late to mount a successful comeback. “This week it’ll be key for us to head back down to Townsville with a focused attitude and ready to pull the sleeves up and get to work the moment the whistle blows. “No x’s and o’s we draw up will overtake effort and attitude.”
