While officers were speaking to the woman, the man approached the male sergeant and following a confrontation, allegedly punched the officer in the jaw, causing him to fall backwards and hit his head on the ground.

The sergeant was knocked briefly unconscious and was treated by other officers at the scene before paramedics arrived. He suffered a cut to the back of the head and facial swelling and was taken to Liverpool Hospital, where he remains in a stable condition.

Police alleged that as they were arresting the Chester Hill man, a probationary constable was pushed. The man was taken to Fairfield Police Station and charged with assault police officer in execution of duty cause actual bodily harm, assault officer in execution of duty, two counts of resist or hinder police officer in the execution of duty, and affray.

He was later also charged with wound person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and
cause grievous bodily harm to a police officer on duty. He has been refused bail to appear Liverpool Local Court on Monday.
