There doesn’t look to be a lot of pressure in this race, so the front-running bay should assume control and reward his backers.
Diamonds And Rust lines up a race later over the mile on the back of a fading fourth at Kembla Grange a fortnight ago on a heavy track.
The four-year-old mare can only improve off that and looks suited out to the mile and back on top of the ground. She could improve sharply, especially given that she’ll also make her own luck on top of the speed in a race without another obvious leader.
Meanwhile, champion trainer trainer Chris Waller is well represented across the meeting with a mix of first starters and gallopers dropping back from metro company.
Among the latter is three-year-old filly Big Angel. The daughter of Zoustar has beaten one runner home in her two career starts but both of them were on heavy tracks.
It’s worth noting that she started in the market on both occasions, so there was a certain level of expectation around how she performed. Her trials suggest she has a lot more talent than what she has been able to show to date.
It could prove fruitful to be forgiving and give her a chance to redeem herself on top of the ground and dropping back in class.
She will need to beat the very short-priced favourite Nearly Fine, but don’t expect there to be as much between the pair in the finish as the market suggests.
