International flights into Melbourne, along with hotel quarantine, will restart on Monday.A family of two adults and three children, aged between three and 18-years-old, face a heft $5,500 fee for a two-week quarantine stay. Adult fees will be set at $3000 and $1,000 will be added to the bill for each additional adult in a room. The cost for children aged between three and 18-years-old will be $500 but there will be no charge for children under three. The quarantine cost for a child under 18-year-olds travelling alone will be $500 but a parent or guardian will be allowed to join the child in quarantine for free, the government said. The government said travellers would be invoiced after they have left mandatory quarantine, and those experiencing hardship could apply for a reduction or waiver. Payment plans will also be available.

A media release from the state government said: “The fee would help ensure Victorian residents get home safely without other travellers trying to quarantine in Melbourne to avoid paying costs in other jurisdictions.”The government said the costs are the same as New South Wales and South Australia. Police and Emergency Services Minister Lisa Neville said the government would continue to fund most of the costs of accommodation, security, transport and logistics, and essential items and services such as meals and medical care.“Moving to a fee contribution model is consistent with the decision of National Cabinet and brings us into line with other states and territories,” Ms Neville said.“It also ensures that when international flights to Victoria resume, we do not get a disproportionate number of returned travellers seeking to complete their mandatory quarantine period here to avoid the fees in other states.“We understand this is a significant cost for people who are coming home – that’s why there will be hardship considerations, including fee waivers, reductions and payment plan options.”In March National Cabinet agreed states and territories would determine the amount travellers entering mandatory quarantine would have to pay. Fees are already charged in New South Wales, Queensland, the Northern Territory, South Australia and Western Australia.More information is available here.
