Paul Luke Mason, 42, appeared in the Supreme Court of Tasmania for sentence after previously pleading guilty to one count of wounding.Justice Michael Brett said on December 30, 2018, Mason was living with his then-partner in a shack community at White Beach when the pair became drunk and started arguing.Mason’s partner left the house and he followed her, with the couple ending up in the front yard of their neighbour’s property. The neighbours attempted to diffuse the argument, but Mason became aggressive. As he left, he picked up a paling that he’d previously kicked in on his way to the property, swinging it at his victim. The man picked up a Besser Block to protect his face, but Mason threw a rock at him – with the rock fracturing his left index finger and partially severing its tip.The victim was then taken by ambulance to hospital for surgical repair. The cray fisherman still suffers ongoing pain and stiffness, with his injury impeding aspects of his work.“Your actions in throwing a rock towards this group of people was dangerous and reckless,” Justice Brett said.“The complainant … had done nothing to warrant your anger.”The judge said Mason now claimed to be remorseful for his actions.“I accept that in your drunken condition you misinterpreted what was happening and I accept you did legitimately feel frightened and apprehensive, but that was solely due to the situation that you had created,” he said.“Your action in acting in a violent and dangerous way in fact resulted in serious injury.”Mason was handed a suspended 12-month prison sentence, but will be subject to a supervision order for the coming year.
