The new Harbour BridgeClimb experience in collaboration with the Sydney Festival is fantastic and long overdue: the first Indigenous storytelling bridge climbing tour, led by Indigenous guides.

One glaring disappointment cannot be fixed by the politically agnostic BridgeClimb, nor by Wesley Enoch, the festival’s Indigenous artistic director.

It sits with the Premier – a directive she should make now she has returned from leave: gently change protocol and replace the NSW flag atop the Harbour Bridge with the Aboriginal flag, to fly alongside the national one.

I was one of the journalists invited on the media day for the “Burrawa” climb, which opened on Friday and runs until January 24. With ochre smeared across our foreheads and the fumes of a smoking ceremony filling our nostrils, we learnt about the Indigenous land on which the bridge stands, along with Indigenous history, culture and language.
