Premier Daniel Andrews announced on Sunday the lifting of restrictions at hospitality venues, meaning patrons will be able to stand while drinking at a pub.Density limits have also been reduced to one person per two square metres, with no other patron cap being enforced. The development paves the way for Geelong pubs and bars to open their doors to more customers in time for the typically busy summer period. The Deck Geelong owner George Zurcas said the changes would help his business “enormously”.

He said he was particularly happy for patrons who will be able to return to stand up drinking after months of sitting down.“Let’s face it, when you go to a hotel, like when I do, I’m always standing around at the bar talking to mates,” Mr Zurcas said.“Being forced to sit down is like being back at primary school.“But now you’ve got the freedom of standing around with your friends, at the bar or the high table.

“It’s going to back to normal, which I think is great just before Christmas.”Cam O’Keefe, who owns Centra and Westend, said he was “thrilled” with the Premier’s announcement. “The fact that patrons can now stand up and eat and drink, that’s a huge one too, because that adds to the atmosphere of a hospitality venue,” he said.“It’s fantastic that people can just come in, walk straight up to the bar and have a beer.“That’s what being in a pub is really all about.”
