One ferry worker said services were “quieter than when COVID first hit”, with only about 25 commuters per trip.
At the wharf, Manly residents appeared to be heeding the request to work from home, with few commuters seen arriving or departing.
One commuter, a chef at a fine dining restaurant in Sydney, said she was still heading to the city despite the request to stay home.
“I have to work. And there is nothing right now that says specifically Manly, so I’m feeling comfortable. But I’m still wearing a mask to do my part.
A Transport for NSW spokeswoman said only commuters with essential travel requirements should be taking buses and ferries to and from the northern beaches.
“As always you should wear a face mask, and find a green dot for the safest place to sit and stand,” she said.
