The Age has retained its position as Melbourne’s leading masthead with an average of more than 4.8 million readers the 12 months to December.

The masthead covered a range of important stories during the month, including the easing of restrictions and the release of the Victorian hotel inquiry.

Other stories that featured on the front pages of The Age in December included Collingwood president Eddie McGuire’s decision to step down at the end of 2021 (a decision that was accelerated in February) and the appointment of a special prosecutor to investigate whether criminal charges should be brought against former and current Victorian police officers over the Lawyer X scandal.

New data shows that 4.4 million of The Age’s audience read the newspaper online, while 1 million read the paper in print.

The Age’s closest Melbourne rival, The Herald Sun, had 4.4 million readers across digital and print.

The Age’s sister masthead The Sydney Morning Herald is the biggest in the country, with more than 9 million readers. In the same period The Australian Financial Review, which is owned by Nine Entertainment Co (the owner of this masthead), had an audience of 3.1 million.
