Canberra kicked off 2020 with horrible smoke haze but the start of 2021 may be very different as current forecasts from the Bureau of Meteorology suggest the start of the new year will consist of rainy days. Rainfall is expected to linger around the region over the coming week but it is expected to pick up in Canberra on Friday and the weekend. Canberra was in for rain and a possible storm on Monday afternoon but this was downgraded from initial forecasts that suggested there could be up to 15 millimetres of rainfall. Up to 5 millimetres of rain was forecast to hit. Temperatures are expected to remain steady throughout the week, forecasts are in the early to mid-twenties. Meteorologist at the Bureau Helen Reid said there was widespread rainfall forecast through the eastern part of NSW for much of the week but the ACT was on the edge of the system. But she said the new year would likely bring some rain. “2021 will start off from some rainfall,” she said. “From Friday onwards Canberra is expecting rainfall.” She said there was a possible shower for Canberra on Tuesday, with a top of 22 degrees expected, there is a 40 per cent chance that 2 millimetres of rain could hit. Cloudy conditions are expected on Wednesday and Thursday, with tops of 24 and 25 degrees, respectively. BOM meteorologist Hugh McDowell said the weather may be unsettled. “There will likely be more thunderstorms through the days, not everyday,” he said. “It won’t be wall-to-wall sunshine.” A top of 22 degrees is forecast for New Years Day with a possible shower. Up to 10 millimetres of rain could hit the ACT on both Saturday and Sunday, tops of 21 and 26 degrees are forecast, respectively.
