Police have expressed their frustration at dangerous and stupid actions on Canberra’s roads, including one case where a passenger was caught standing through the sunroof of a moving car. The passenger and driver ended up with fines of $705 each over that incident, and the person behind the wheel also copped three demerit points, police say. They were also angered by two drivers caught well over the speed limit – one of whom was caught travelling at double the 90km/h limit on William Hovell Drive. In the first incident, police driving on Canberra Avenue in Fyshwick spotted a silver Subaru Liberty about 9.20pm Sunday. They say a passenger was standing through the open sunroof. Road Policing’s Detective Inspector Marcus Boorman condemned the reckless actions of the driver and passenger. “As for standing up through the sunroof of a moving car, what can I say? There’s no excuse for it. It’s dangerous, and it’s stupid,” he said Earlier on Sunday, a 50-year-old man was found driving 180km/h in a 90km/h zone on William Hovell Drive and a 23-year-old man was found travelling at 168km/h in a 100km/h zone on the Monaro Highway. Both drivers were fined $1841 and issued six demerit points. “The speed limits are set to ensure everyone’s safety on our roads,” Detective Inspector Boorman said. “When we see drivers doing double the speed there is a real chance of a serious collision involving innocent people.”
