Face masks will be mandatory for residents in Greater Brisbane from 6pm today until Monday evening as the state desperately tries to prevent the highly contagious strain of COVID-19 from decimating the community. People over the age of 12 who are not wearing a mask outside their home face $200 fines. The direction from Queensland Chief Health Officer Jeanette Young has resulted in masks flying off supermarket shelves, with some businesses appearing to take advantage of the demand.
Images taken by Opposition Leader David Crisafulli show a chemist within the Morayfield Shopping Centre selling a 50 pack of masks for a staggering $59.The same product is being sold at Kmart for $15 and a similar 50 pack is available on Amazon for $5.“This isn’t on,” Mr Crisafulli said.“Some shops in Brisbane are increasing mask sales by 400 per cent, taking advantage of people’s anxiety.“This is already hard enough for Queenslanders.”
Stock at Chemist Warehouse’s Brisbane stores appears to be dwindling, with many facemasks listed as unavailable.Terry White Chemists at Gasworks in Newstead was this morning limiting sales to five marks per customer, selling them in paper bags instead of the original packaging.Dr Young has urged people not to panic, saying Queensland had “plenty” of masks and medical supplies.
