Sky News host Peter Gleeson says the cut-price plane fares the federal government has committed to are being undercut by concerns around border closures, particularly in Queensland.
As part of the federal government’s $1.2 billion stimulus package 800,000 discounted airline tickets will be made available to Australians in a bid to restore the tourism, travel and aviation industries.
“The Palaszczuk government has singlehandedly handed the tourism industry a terrible, terrible, set of cards because of the uncertainty around border closures,” Mr Gleeson told Sky News host Peta Credlin.
He said it was “hypocrisy” for the Queensland government to want the federal government to “pick up the tabs for Brisbanites” who wish to head to Cairns without giving the tourism industry certainty.
“The time has come for state and territory leaders in this country to give the tourism industry some certainty, they need certainty they don’t need more lockdown and they certainly don’t need more border closures.”
