A joint search and rescue operation involving Tasmania Police, Victoria Police and the Australian Marine and Safety Authority (AMSA) located a deserted yacht in the Bass Strait on New Year’s Eve. A Victoria Police vessel was deployed to take the boat in tow to nearby Deal Island where it arrived about midday on Friday.

Marine authorities received the report of the overdue yachtie at 2.10pm on Thursday.The experienced solo yachtsman left Eden in NSW on an 18m yacht called Munyana on December 26 and was intending to arrive at Deal Island on December 28.An AMSA spokeswoman confirmed the search for the sailor had been called off and is now subject to a coronial inquest. She said the search was called off on Friday morning for survivability reasons. Due to the incidents location between both states, Tasmanian and Victorian authorities are working out which jurisdiction will be in charge of the inquest.
