Former NRL player Tristan Sailor has attempted to have his bail varied to attend an Oztag competition in NSW, as he continues to fight allegations of aggravated sexual assault.
Mr Sailor’s lawyer Jessica Kavvalos argued in Downing Central Local Court on Thursday that he needed to attend the competition in Coffs Harbour on the NSW Mid North Coast to “remain fit” in anticipation of making a return to the NRL.
Mr Sailor, the son of NRL great and dual international Wendell Sailor, has also been playing with the Wollongong Vikings Rugby Union Club.
Mr Sailor, 22, was charged in October last year after allegedly giving a 24-year-old woman a sedative before sexually assaulting her. He denies the allegations.
As part of his original bail conditions, Mr Sailor must report to Wollongong Police Station once daily on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
He is also under a curfew, and must not be away from his Wollongong home between 10pm and 5am without his father or mother.
Ms Kavvalos also sought to alter a condition that states Mr Sailor is not able to attend any licensed premises where alcohol is served. The court heard how he had been offered a job at the Illawarra Hotel by a family friend, where he wished to work nights while returning to university.
“He doesn’t intend to drink any alcohol,” Ms Kavvalos said.
Ms Kavvalos argued Mr Sailor was not a danger to the community as he has had no previous convictions prior to the allegations, and he could only maintain his fitness by participating in sporting events.
