Two new locally-acquired COVID-19 cases have been recorded in Victoria after six consecutive days of no new infections.

Health authorities said the new cases, reported on Friday, were primary close contacts of pre-existing cases and have been in quarantine during their infectious period.

The new infections come just hours before Premier Daniel Andrews is expected to wind back COVID-19 restrictions put in place after the Holiday Inn outbreak.

Fears the virus would spread into the community led to a five-day “circuit-breaker” lockdown, which ended on 18 February.

Current restrictions include a strict five-person limit on gatherings at home and compulsory face masks indoors.

On Thursday, Mr Andrews said he was “very confident tomorrow will be a day of good news”, with restrictions likely to return to COVID-safe summer settings that were in place at Christmas.
