A multi-car crash near Wollongong has left one woman dead and three others, including two children, in hospital.
Emergency services were called to the M1 Princes Highway near Masters Road at Figtree about 7.15pm on Friday after reports a sedan had struck a tree, trapping its four occupants.
The blue Holden Statesman had careered off the southbound lanes of the highway after it was involved in a collision with another car.

Police said the female driver of the Holden died at the scene. A teenage girl sitting in the front passenger seat was critically injured and airlifted to Westmead hospital, while two children sitting in the back seat were taken Wollongong Hospital in stable conditions.
A female driver of the second vehicle was not injured and taken to Wollongong Hospital for mandatory testing.
“No words can describe the scene that we were faced [with] this evening,” NSW Ambulance acting inspector Nathan O’Brien said on Friday night.
“Going to a road accident when we know there are children involved is always difficult for first responders. Multiple patients with serious injuries can create a very challenging environment for paramedic crews. ”

Twelve NSW Ambulance crews attended the scene, as well as two rescue helicopters. However 9News has reported an off-duty paramedic was first on the scene after driving past the crash.
