A woman rescued from dangerous flooding at Kambah Pool overnight had gone there to take photos, prompting a call from police not to partake in “disaster tourism”. Fire and rescue teams along with ACT police and SES crews used throw bags and ropes to safely retrieve the woman after she became trapped in the water. Police said the woman and her friend were there to take photos for social media. As she went closer to the water to get a photo, she slipped on the rocks and fell in. She was swept through the fast-moving water before she grabbed onto a tree. The woman was treated at the scene by paramedics but did not suffer any major injuries and was not taken to hospital. Detective Inspector Simon Coady said the woman was lucky to escape without serious injury. “We could have been talking about a very different outcome,” he said. “There is no photo or social media post that is worth risking your life to get. “Any water rescue puts the lives of not only yourself, but those of emergency services personnel at risk. “While the rain may have eased today, rivers and flooded areas will take some time to subside – so in the coming days we are still urging people to avoid those areas.” The Emergency Services Agency has also received several reports of people playing in floodwater and heading to dangerous areas to get photos. He warned people should stay away from flooded areas and swollen waterways, as although the rain had stopped, the danger posed by fast-moving water remained. A video posted to social media depicted two boys playing in a stormwater drain after Tuesday’s downpour. The flood rescue comes as two Canberra workers were rescued from their car earlier on Tuesday after it was swept away in the Naas River when the pair tried to go over a flooded crossing. The car was carried for 400 metres down the river, before the alarm was raised by passers-by. The two workers were helped to safety by eight community rescuers. More than 50 millimetres have fallen across the Canberra area since midnight on Monday. A chance of showers is expected on Wednesday for Canberra but only up to 1 millimetre is expected to fall.
